Chairman, Sequoia Capital
Berkeley Lights is the first investment made by Sequoia Capital in a company containing the promise to turn modern medicine upside down. We invested because of a conviction that massive advances in affordable computation, allied with a novel opto-electronics approach, will help doctors design personalized treatments for patients suffering from deadly diseases. We hope that, with time, Berkeley Lights becomes a leader of its industry much as other early stage Sequoia landmark investments in companies such as Google, Paypal, Linkedin, Youtube, Whatsapp and Airbnb have done in their respective industries. I have been a member of Sequoia Capital since 1986 during which time we have followed and invested in the explosion of exciting technology companies that have emerged around the world. In my other life, I have been a writer and my most recent book, Leading, co-authored with Sir Alex Ferguson, the longtime manager of Manchester United and the most successful coach in the history of professional sports, has just been published.
